<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To select an appropriate paper tray even in the case there is no paper tray set to a required paper size in APS (automatic paper tray selection) processing. <P>SOLUTION: Paper trays 162 of a paper feeding part 160 include universal trays that can change a paper size by changing a paper sheet even in the middle of a job. A control part 100 determines whether there is the paper tray of a paper size suited to the output image size of a read document, referring to a tray state table 210. In the case there is not such a paper tray, an APS table 200 is referred to, and if there is an unselected universal tray, it is preferentially selected. If there are a plurality of unselected universal trays, the optimal tray is determined and selected from the viewpoint of easiness of changing the paper sheet and printing productivity.
