PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink drop detecting method which prevents adverse influence on a time required for printing through put, in a serving operation wherein a time necessary for detecting ink drops is used in a printing process. SOLUTION: The system and method for selective serving operation using a print head as base comprises a step for determining an extent of effects which the ink drops constituted to be ejected from a plurality of print heads respectively exert on printing output, a step (406, 606) for characterizing at least one of the plurality of groups based on the extent of influence exerted by the ink drops, and a step (410, 614) for performing the selective ink drop detection of the first print head group constituted so as to eject ink drops to the printing output to be influenced to a predetermined extent.
