PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To synthesize a cost effective catalyst precursor for use in homopolymerization or copolymerization of an olefin, which can produce an olefin having high bulk density and excellent morphology suitable for a vapor phase process technology. SOLUTION: The catalyst precursor comprises a metallocene compound, a magnesium-containing compound and a thermoplastic polymer as a carrier. The metallocene compound is represented by the general formula: (Cp)<SB>z</SB>MR<SB>w</SB>X<SB>y</SB>(wherein Cp represents an unsubstituted or substituted cyclopentadienyl ring, M represents a IVB or VB-group transition metal, R represents a hydrocarbyl group having 1-20C, X represents a halogen, 1≤z≤3, 0≤w≤3 and 0≤y≤3).
