PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To dehydrogenate a cyclic compound such as cyclohexane that has a carbon-carbon single bond in a ring at mild conditions. SOLUTION: A method for dehydrogenating the cyclic compound having the carbon-carbon single bond in the presence of a dehydrogenation catalyst to convert at least one carbon-carbon single bond to a carbon-carbon double bond is characterized by performing a hydrogenation reaction in the presence of a nitro compound in a solution dispersed with a dehydrogenation catalyst such as a metal of Group VIII or its compound. This reaction method can be used for converting an alicyclic compound, a heterocyclic compound or a partially nuclear hydrogenated aromatic compound to produce a corresponding aromatic compound. In addition, the dehydrogenation catalyst used for the reaction can be recovered and reused. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
