PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for driving a plasma display panel is provided to improve a contrast ratio and reduce a time for initialization by detecting an electric signal of an initial waveform and controlling the initial waveform. CONSTITUTION: A sensing portion(41) senses an electric signal of an initial waveform which is supplied from a voltage source(36) to a display panel(39). A control portion(43) controls the electric signal of the initial waveform which is supplied from the voltage source to the display panel. The control portion is formed with a switching element arranged between the voltage source and the display panel. The electric signal is one of the voltage and the current. The voltage source is one of a setup voltage source and a setdown voltage source. The sensing portion is formed with a resistant element installed between the control portion and the display panel.
