[Also in Division B3] An axle tube 2 is secured to a differential gear housing 1 and a half shaft 3 is mounted in the housing and supported by a roller bearing 4 at the outboard end of the tube 2. A brake carrying plate 5 is secured to the tube 2 and the half shaft has a flange 6 for securement of a brake drum 8 and wheel rim 9. The half shaft 3 is hollow so that, without any increase of weight over a solid shaft it can be of larger diameter and greater stiffness. Hollow half shafts 17 may be connected to their respective wheels 16 and a differential unit 15 by universal joints 18. The wheels 16 may be controlled by oblique guide arms (not shown) and springs 20 may connect the pivotal axle to the vehicle. |
