PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly detect various defects by securing sufficient defect detection sensitivity regarding an optical disk device, e.g. a phase change optical disk device. SOLUTION: A defect is detected by determining a signal level of a reproducing signal RF based on hysteresis characteristics by first and second thresholds THR1 and THR2.
