PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus constituted to be compact because the peripheral length of an intermediate transfer body in short. SOLUTION: A toner image is formed on a photoreceptor 1 first. Then, the toner image is transferred to an intermediate transfer belt 5. The traveling speed of the belt 5 is slower than the circumferential speed of the photoreceptor 1, and the toner image is transferred while it is reduced in the advancing direction of the belt 5. The toner image on the belt 5 is secondarily transferred to recording paper 9 at the position of a secondary transfer roller 6. Since the traveling speed of the belt 5 is shower than the carrying speed of the paper 9, the toner image is transferred while it is enlarged in the advancing direction of the paper 9. Namely, the toner image reduced at the time of primary transfer is restored to an outputted image. Then, the paper 9 to which the image is transferred is outputted to the outside after the image is fixed by a fixing device 8.
