A waveguide optical amplifier is disclosed. The optical amplifier includes a substrate and a cladding layer disposed on the substrate. The waveguide optical amplifier also includes an amplifying core disposed within the cladding layer and a secondary core disposed within the cladding layer proximate the amplifying core. The secondary core is adapted to absorb at least a portion of alight signal being transmitted through the amplifying core. A feedback loop for dynamically changing the amount of light being absorbed and a method for dynamically controlling light signal absorption are also provided. |
