Autotaxin polypeptide comprising the amino acid residues 45 to 859 of SEQ ID NO: 9, 32 to 858 of SEQ ID NO:2, 49 to 915 of SEQ ID NO:4, 49 to 863 of SEQ ID NO:5 or 36 to 885 of SEQ ID NO:6 are useful for the treatment of decreasing blood glucose, decreasing the insulin dosage needed and for treating conditions associated with elevated serum glucose level, lipid levels or free fatty acid levels.
