PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved optical modulator which enables optimization of an NRZ (non return to zero) modulation method. SOLUTION: The optical modulator is for transmitting data encoded by the NRZ method by modulating the intensity of a light signal. A laser modulator has a shaping means for obtaining a low bandwidth signal 618 from an input control signal 635 and a transfer function 630 favoring the extinction speed of the resulting light signal.
