PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that attains image reading with high accuracy by preventing deterioration in the image quality due to 'oscillation' caused when an image read means receives angular moment by a driving force in the scanning direction in the case of reading and scanning. SOLUTION: The collision of a stationary slide member 103f with a guide shaft 103c decides the position of a carriage 103d supporting an image sensor unit 108 in the vertical direction with respect to a moving direction, and a pressing slide member 103g pressed by a pressing a spring (pressing means) 103h from a side opposite to the stationary slide member 103f clamps the carriage 103d to support it in a state without backlash caused in the fitting.
