PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an immersion liquid which is inexpensive, is easy to handle, does not splash in the form of particulates, is suitable for use in a clean room, permits cleaning with water and does not damage a sample. SOLUTION: An aqueous solution of sugar having a known refractive index is used in place of an immersion oil.
