PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an aqueous resin composition excellent in curability, processability, retorting resistance, hygienic properties, applicability by spraying, and dispersibility in water. SOLUTION: The aqueous resin composition contains (A) a polyester resin having a group of structural formula (1) (wherein R is H, an alkyl or aryl; X is an organic segment having at least one hydroxy group or carboxy group (including a carboxylic acid anhydride); and (n) is 1 to 3) in the molecular chain and/or on the end of the molecular chain, and carboxy group in the molecular chain, with an acid value of 150-800 eq/10<16> g and a number-average molecular weight of 5,000 to 10,000, (B) a phenolic resin, (C) a basic compound, and (D) water, or a mixture of water with an organic solvent.
