PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive and secure payment system with which one dedicated pin pad does not have to be attached to one payment terminal and a malicious third party is prevented from reading password number and internal data of a record carrier. SOLUTION: This payment system and portable telephone is provided with an IC card 2 used for payment processing, the portable telephone 3 having a function for reading the data of the IC card and inputting a password, and the payment terminal 11 for performing transmission and reception with the portable telephone and having a function for analyzing and storing the data read from the IC card and personal identification data including the password number. The portable telephone is used instead of a pin pad in the conventional payment system, and data transmitted and received between the portable telephone and the payment terminal are encrypted to construct an inexpensive and secure system.
