Producing an aqueous emulsion of a bituminous binder involves contacting the binder with an aqueous phase at a temperature above 130 deg C under a pressure, such that the aqueous phase remains liquid. A binder, whose interfacial tension with water at 180 deg C is no more than 20 mN/m, and an emulsifier-free aqueous phase are used.
