PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an MR head compatible magnetic recording medium wherein an error rate is low and offtrack is small. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium constituted of a nonmagnetic support, a basecoat layer, a magnetic layer and a backcoat layer, a thickness of a magnetic layer is set to <=0.30μm, center line average surface roughness Ra is set to <=3.2 nm, [(μm SL)/μm SUS)] is set to 0.7 to 1.3 when a friction coefficient between the magnetic layer and SUS isμm SUS and a friction coefficient between the backcoat layer and SUS isμBSUS, and [μm SL)/μBSUS)] is set to 0.8 to 1.5. Thus, the good magnetic recording medium of small offtrack is obtained.
