The invention relates to a method for producing o-alkylphenols by reacting phenol with an alkanol at an elevated temperature in the gaseous phase and in the presence of a metal oxide catalyst, whereby the reaction is carried out in at least two steps and, in each reaction step, the mole ratio alkanol/phenol is adjusted to a value of about </= 0.4. A significant increase in the selectivity for the o-alkylphenol is thus obtained.
