An optical networking element has a spatially varying wavelength response formed in a monolithic InGaAsP structure whose quantum well active structure has modified effective bandgap properties. The element can be a laser, a photodetector or an amplifier. The device can implement the spatially varying wavelength response through multiple independently controllable sections.
