Trialkyl tin mono-alkoxides, wherein each of the alkyl groups contain not less than 4 carbon atoms and the alkoxy group contains from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, which are contaminated with dialkyl tin dialkoxides are purified by a washing treatment with water or aqueous alkali. The trialkyl tin mono-alkoxides may be prepared by reacting the corresponding trialkyl tin halide prepared by a Grignard reaction with an alkali metal alkoxide. The treatment may be carried out at normal temperatures. The preferred alkali is sodium hydroxide but any hydroxide, carbonate or bicarbonate of the alkali metals, alkaline earth metals or ammonia may be used. In the examples the following compounds are purified:-tri-n-butyl tin mono-n-butoxide and tri-n-octyl tin mono-methoxide. Tri - n - butyl tin mono - n - butoxide is prepared from n-butyl magnesium bromide and stannic bromide and adding sodium-n-butoxide to the reaction product. Some tetra-n-butyl tin is also formed. Tri - n - octyl tinmono - methoxide is obtained from the reaction of tri-n-octyl tin chloride and methanol. Specifications 590,734 and 692,554 are referred to. |
