PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cleaning method suitable for obtaining a magnetic tape where the occurrence of dropout or the like caused by unnecessary power sticking is difficult. SOLUTION: In cleaning of a magnetic tape 1 having an optical servo recess formed in a backcoat layer 2, solid CO2 is sprayed on the surface of the backcoat layer 2 with an angle set in a direction opposite a tape traveling direction. Thus, combustion wastes stuck to the optical servo recess and its periphery on the surface of the backcoat layer are blown off, and the blown off combustion wastes are sucked and removed.
