<p>A steering control apparatus (20) for a vehicle steering system comprises a rotary member (122) having a face with centering detents (124), and a piston member (110) having a face (129) arranged opposite the rotary member face with centering detents (112) aligned with the rotary member detents when the rotary member is in a centered position. Bearing members (136) are pressed between the rotary and piston members and into contact with seats (118) of the aligned detents (124, 112) to resist relative movement between the members and movement of a connected steerable member. The opposing detents (112, 124) each have a ramp (116, 131) inclined from the seat (118) to a track (114, 126) in the corresponding face, and the ramp and track are formed by a groove having substantially the same radius (R) as the bearing member.</p> |
