PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ion quantity detection method capable of detecting simultaneously the positive ion quantity and the negative ion quantity in the air with a small detection device. SOLUTION: A prescribed positive voltage is applied between a first electrode pair comprising a positive ion acceleration electrode plate 1 for accelerating positive ions and a positive ion collection electrode plate 2 provided separately at a proper distance from the positive ion acceleration electrode plate 1 roughly in parallel therewith, for collecting positive ions. A prescribed negative voltage is applied between a second electrode pair comprising a negative ion acceleration electrode plate 5 for accelerating negative ions and a negative ion collection electrode plate 6 provided separately at a proper distance from the negative ion acceleration electrode plate 5 roughly in parallel therewith, and having an insulating material 9 interposed between itself and the positive ion collection electrode plate 2, for collecting negative ions. Each current flowing respectively between the positive ion collection electrode plate 2 and the negative ion collection electrode plate 6, and a prescribed fixed potential (12) is detected (13, 14), and the positive ion quantity and the negative ion quantity in the air are detected simultaneously based on each current.
