The invention relates to the identification of cdk inhibitors as inhibitors of pathogen gene expression, replication and reactivation. The invention also relates to the identification of a combination therapy to inhibit pathogen replication in which a drug that inhibits pathogen replication by targeting a specific pathogen-encoded protein is administered in combination with a drug that inhibits pathogen replication by targeting host-encoded cdk proteins. Compositions and assays for the identification and use of such inhibitors are provided as are methods of use of the inhibitors
