A fresh- or salt-water treatment system is employed in a fish- or crustacean-farming process. The water circulates in an essentially closed, cascading loop with a main loop (A), and two or more sub-loops (B, C) with additional water treatment functions. The first loop (A) consists of a fish basin (1), sediment trap (2), a de-gassing/storage tank (3) and a low-pressure oxygenation system (4). The second closed loop (B) has a biologically active nitrification filter (5) and a de-gassing unit (6). The third closed loop (C) has a biologically active de-nitrification filter (7) and a biomass (sedimentation/micro-filtration) trap (8). The two secondary closed loops (B, C) have a lower volumetric flow than the first (A), and have additional functional units to deliver higher water purity. The aerobic conditions in the second closed loop (B) promote nitrification and the removal of carbon content. The third closed loop (C) has anoxic conditions promoting de-nitrification.
