PURPOSE: Provided are a styrofoam excellent in fire retardancy and extinction capability, which can be easily cut and molded, and which is light and inexpensive, and which generates an extinction gas(CO2) on firing, and a method for producing the same. CONSTITUTION: The styrofoam is coated with calcium carbonate(CaCO3) powder. The calcium carbonate powder is obtained by crushing at least one of limestone, oystershell, and shell. The calcium carbonate powder is coated on the foamed styrofoam beads by using soda silicate as inorganic coking agent. The styrofoam is produced by the steps of (S1) crushing styrofoam beads into desired size; (S2) foaming the crushed styrofoam beads to obtain a styrofoam having desired size; and (S4) applying calcium carbonate on the foamed styrofoam.
