Device for holding a printed item (12) for reading comprises a transparent bearing surface (10) on which the printed item is placed with the page to be read facing toward the bearing surface, and a suspending device (20) for positioning the bearing surface in the reading position. Preferred Features: The bearing surface is a glass plate with a frame and holding clips (64). The suspending device consists of fixing devices (54, 56) for fixing to a base (18) and a rope, wire or rod holder (26, 28, 30, 32) on the bearing surface. The height and angle of the bearing surface can be adjusted.
