Method involves deforming tubular shaft blank (13) in its individual state, i.e. before joining the valve disk on the valve shaft, initially at least on the disk-side end in a rotationally symmetrical massive forming process to such an extent that the disk-side end of the valve shaft is closed with the formation of a center spigot. The next step involves, after placing the valve disk on the valve shaft up to the shoulder, inserting in a form-locking manner the combustion chamber-side protruding end of the closed valve shaft into the combustion chamber-side defining contour of the central opening. The valve disk is made of a light-weight material, preferably a ceramic, especially silicon carbide, a titanium/aluminum alloy, or an intermetallic phase, especially titanium aluminide.
