An information system 10 for providing information to a user via a communication network 120. The information system comprises a location-specific input system 110 which can be incorporated into a portable computing device such as a mobile telephone, a PDA or a laptop, which receives an input from a user. Information is then returned to the user based on their current position. For example, a user wishing to purchase cinema tickets would only be presented with local cinema information. The positioning means can be determined by locating the cell a mobile user is in, querying a cell phone service provider, or determined by GPS or the like. The advantage is that the user is only presented with directly relevant information.
