An automotive exhaust gas system has an outer mantle around a cylindrical catalytic body (2) containing an inner cylindrical filter core (3). The mantle has an exhaust gas inlet (6) and an outlet (7). Incoming gas passes first through the catalytic body before reversing direction via deflection baffles to pass through the filter core to the outlet. The cylindrical catalyst is separated from the inner filter core by a temperature compensation layer (5). The catalytic outer cylinder (2) comprises a series of concentric sheet metal rings (12) separated by gas gaps. The catalytic section and filter section have the same length and are constructed in one piece by welding or soldering.
