A process for conversion of polyvinyl alcohol into very fine fibers by flash spinning from aqueous solution under high pressure, i.e. for production of Plexifibrillin, which can be used as a synthetic pulp for production of paper and textile-like flat structures is new. A high pressure process for preparation of Plexifibrillen (sic) and plexifibrillar flat structures (sic) in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) from it, where the PVA to water wt. ratio is 1-0.5 to 1-10 under high pressure and at a temperature of 160-230 deg C with conversion into a solution or gel, in which supercritical carbon dioxide is mixed in, and the mixture, by means of a spin pump under the system pressure via a heated spinning nozzle is extruded in an expansion space in which a pressure lower than the system pressure predominates, and via impact-like water pressure expansion is separated into fine fibers. Independent claims are included for: (1) production of Plexifibrillin from PVA; and (2) flat structures obtained from Plexifibrillin.
