Cation exchange resins are made by condensing in acid medium an aromatic compound containing one or more etherified phenolic hydroxyl groups with an aldehyde, either the phenol ether, the aldehyde or both, containing at least one ion active group, continuing the condensation until a gel is formed and drying the gel at an elevated temperature. Specified are:-cation exchange groups-sulphonic acid, carboxyl, sulphonamide, cyanamide and nitroalkyl; phenol ethers-anisole, diphenyl ether, diphenylene oxide, diphenylene dioxide, phenoxy ethane sulphonic acid and phenoxy acetic acid; aldehydes-formaldehyde, benzaldehyde, disulphonic acid and acetaldehyde disulphonic acid. In examples:-(1) Anisole is heated with benzaldehyde - 2.4 - disulphonic acid to give a sulphonated triaryl methane derivative (see Group IV (b)). The mixture is then heated with further anisole and formaldehyde. (2), (3) and (4) Formaldehyde is condensed respectively with diphenyl ether sulphonic acid, phenoxy ethane sulphonic acid and phenoxy acetic acid (5) The sodium salt of benzaldehyde - 2.4 - disulphonic acid is introduced into an emulsion of diphenylene oxide and sulphuric acid. After heating, sulphuric acid is added to the whole condensed with formaldehyde.ALSO:A sulphonated triaryl methane derivative of formula <FORM:0700867/IV (b)/1> is made by heating anisol with the sodium salt of benzaldehyde-2.4-disulphonic acid in sulphuric acid. The derivative is heated with further anisol and with formaldehyde to make a cation-exchange resin (see Group IV (a)). |
