A pipe conveys and exposes flowing water to a magnetic field. The pipe assembly has a tubular inlet (18) separated from a tubular outlet (20) by a wider, flattened section (14) with a reduced-thickness (12) inner passage. Permanent magnets (24) of opposing polarity are fitted to both sides of the flat surfaces. The magnets (24) are located in small socket fixtures (22) distributed uniformly over the flat surfaces (14, 16).
