The food basket (1), especially for steaming vegetables, is made from a rigid material such as pressed sheet metal, forming a base (2) and side walls (3), with 3 - 5 mm diameter perforations (4), at least in the side walls, covering at least 30 per cent, and preferably 35 - 58 per cent, of the basket's total surface area. The basket is shaped so that the joint between its base and side walls forms a regular curve, and the height of the basket is equivalent to a third of its diameter.
