The separator for detaching a strip (20) carrying security elements from a sheet material (16) to which the security elements are applied consists of a roller (28) over which the strip passes approximately pwerpendicular to the surface of the sheet. The roller is set at a predetermined distance from the surface of the sheet, varying between 5 and 10 mm, and it rotates freely about its axle (29).
