A safety release breakaway buckle, e.g. for pet collars, animal halters, helmet straps and belts, comprises: a first buckle half 3 which has an upstanding stud 15 with a non-round keeper 5 mounted its free end 15; a second buckle half 9 which has a non-round opening 7 which corresponds to the shape of the keeper 5 such that the keeper 5 and the stud 15 may only pass through and engage the opening 7 when the stud 15 is twisted about its axis; and a resilient mouth portion 31 which extends between the opening 7 and a peripheral edge of the second buckle part 9 and which has a width narrower than the diameter of the stud 15 so that in normal use the stud 15 is prevented from sliding out of the opening 7 but under predetermined separating force applied to the buckle allows the stud 15 to slide out from the opening 7. |
