PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a serial printer, and its carriage drive-controlling method capable of obtaining stabilized printing quality by surely suppressing generation of dumping due to overshooting and undershooting at a speed changing point of a carriage, eliminating printing turbulence and shortening a setting time. SOLUTION: For the serial printer which is slidably supported along guide shafts 13 and 14 extending crosswise between frames 11 and 12 and equipped with the carriage 15 on which a printing head 16 is mounted and driving means 17 and 17a for allowing the carriage 15 to be reciprocated along the guide shaft, electromagnets 11a and 12a provided to the frame, plungers 15a and 15b comprising magnetic substance provided to the carriage and a control part 19 for drive-controlling the magnet are provided. The control part is so constituted as to drive the magnet near a speed changing point for acceleration or deceleration of the carriage.
