PURPOSE: A method for implementing a UTOPIA(Universal Test and Operations PHY Interface for ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode)) protocol having sequential numbers is provided to add sequential number information to initial transmission data and to transmit the data, so that errors can be checked. CONSTITUTION: In a transmission step, 1 byte in which information of sequential numbers is recorded is added to an initial part of a 53 bytes cell, to generate 54 bytes cell(S10). A transmission SOC(Start Of Cell) is transmitted, and at the same time, the generated 54 bytes cell is transmitted(S20,S30). And in a receiving step, a cell is received. An initial 1 byte is recognized as information of sequential numbers, and whether the sequential numbers are sequentially organized is checked. If so, a service is provided. And if the sequential numbers are not sequentially organized, it is considered that an error occurs.
