PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely perform sewing to a next buttonholing stitch by holding/ cutting a lower thread so that the length of the end of the thread can be shortened as little as possible. SOLUTION: In a sewing machine 10 for buttonholing provided with a fabric feed stage 13, looper base 31, needle plate 32 having a needle hole 32b, turning mechanism 15 for turning the looper base 31, lower thread cutter 30 for cutting the lower thread after the end of sewing, and lower thread holding means for holding the lower thread to be cut, the lower thread holding means is composed of a lower thread guiding face 32f of the needle plate 32 and a lower thread pressing member 27, and the lower thread is cut closely to the lower thread holding means. On the needle plate 32, an opening part 32c is provided while being opened in one direction continuously from the needle hole 32b. Further, a guide means composed of the turning mechanism 15 and the fabric feed stage 13 is provided for guiding the lower thread so that the lower thread can be led out of the opening part 32c and held by the lower thread holding means after the end of sewing.
