PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer/liquid crystal composite material comprising a polymer and a liquid crystal, subjected to phase separation and compounding and having a high liquid crystal content and a display element comprising a low-voltage driving dimming layer using the composite material. SOLUTION: This polymer/liquid crystal composite material comprises a copolymer composed of at least two monomers in which either one of the monomers is an unsaturated hydrocarbon and the other is a copolymer of a carboxylic acid having an unsaturated bond, a derivative of the carboxylic acid having the unsaturated bond or an ester of an alcohol having the unsaturated bond and at least one kind of liquid crystal compound selected from the group consisting of fluorine atom-containing liquid crystal compounds and cyano group-containing liquid crystal compounds. The composite material is subjected to the phase separation and compounding.
