PURPOSE: A method for determining a cylinder for an internal combustion engine is provided to determine the cylinder using difference of ionic current due to discharging voltage of a spark plug. CONSTITUTION: A method comprises the steps of: a step(S100) in which an ionic current detector detects ionic current; a step(S200) in which an ECU(Electronic control Unit) receiving the detected ionic current to determine whether the ionic current is larger than preset reference value, set to be an ionic current value corresponding with discharging voltage appropriate to determine a corresponding cylinder is in compression stroke so that the cylinder is determined to be in exhaust stroke if the ionic current is not larger than the preset reference value; and a step(S300,S400) determining the corresponding cylinder is in compression stroke if the ionic current is determined to be larger than the preset reference value, and determining the corresponding cylinder is in exhaust stroke if the ionic current is determined not to be larger than the preset reference value.
