PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator with minimized hoist occupying area and reduced time of construction and the assembling method thereof. SOLUTION: The elevator comprises a pair of car guide rails 2a and 2b provided on both sides of a car 1, a lateral beam 3 provided between the guide rails 2a and 2b, and a winder 5 arranged on the lateral beam 3. A rope 7 wound around a sheave 5a of the winder 5 has the car 1 hung at one end and a counterweight 8 hung at the other end. By operating the winder 5, the car 1 and the counterweight 8 elevates/lowers in an opposite direction. The guide rail 2a of a pair of the car guide rails 2a and 2b for guiding the car 1 is constituted with an auxiliary guide rail. The auxiliary guide rail only guides the counterweight 8 therefore eliminating a space for installing a guide rail exclusively used for the counterweight.
