PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeding device for an image forming device capable of detecting the presence or absence and little remaining amount of a recording medium by only providing a recording medium detection sensor on a paper feeding tray. SOLUTION: When a push-up plate of the paper feeding tray is set to a descending position (P1 and P2). Whether or not the recording medium detection sensor is ON is decided, and when the sensor is ON, the push-up plate is set to an ascending position (P4 and P5). Whether or not the recording medium detection sensor is ON is decided, and when the sensor is ON, the absence (empty) of the recording medium on the paper feeding tray is decided. When the recording medium detection sensor is not ON in the decision of the step P3, the push-up plate is set to the ascending position (P10 and P11). Whether or not the recording medium detection sensor is ON is decided (P12), and when the sensor is ON, little remaining amount (near empty) of the recording medium on the paper feeding tray is decided. When the recording medium detection sensor is not ON in the decision of the step P12, that is, when the sensor is OFF, sufficient amount (FULL) of the recording medium on the paper feeding tray is decided.
