PURPOSE: Provided is a tetrazolium dye reagent composition, which is stabilized by a method for stabilizing the dye component so that light exposure does not adversely affect the dye. CONSTITUTION: The reagent composition comprises a tetrazolium dye; and an effective amount of a nitrite stabilizer. Particularly, in the reagent composition, the tetrazolium dye is a water soluble tetrazolium salt, and the nitrite stabilizer is a nitrite salt. The reagent composition further comprises an analyte oxidizing signal producing system, such as an analyte oxidizing enzyme, for example, an analyte dehydrogenase or an analyte oxidase, an electron transfer agent and an enzyme cofactor, in many applications.
