PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce metamerism wherein color values in a color space of perception are mapped to those corresponding to a device-dependent color space. SOLUTION: A plurality of different inverse transformations are applied to obtain a plurality of different target colors in an observing condition-depended space by each of a plurality of different observing conditions, such as different observing light sources or different environments. Based on a spectrum model of the reflectivity of a device color, a plurality of different target color values in the observing condition-depended space are subjected to regression analysis, to calculate unit color coordinates on device-depended coordinates which optimally match the plurality of different target color values in the observation condition depended space. The regression analysis may be a weighted one. Since the target color values in the goal device-depended space are obtained via the optimal matching regression analysis of the plurality of different target color values corresponding to the plurality of different observing conditions, the deviation in the conditional color matching of color appearance due to the changes in the observing condition is reduced greatly, as compared with the conversion for obtaining accurate values only for a single observed condition.
