PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image having comparatively proper brightness and tint. SOLUTION: Color signal values relative to white level in a positive image are previously stored in a memory in a control unit 44. The positive image is picked up to obtain color signals consisting of an R signal, a G signal, and a B signal from image signals outputted from an electronic solid-state imaging element 21. Variations in the peak levels of these color signals determine whether the positive image contains white or not. When the positive image contains no white, each level of the R signal, the G signal, and the B signal is adjusted in a color balance adjusting circuit 26 so that the peak values of the R signal, the G signal, and the B signal may be the value relative to the white level stored in the memory in the control unit 44.
