PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus in which the occurrence of a moving image false edge can be suppressed rather than a conventional apparatus. SOLUTION: A motion amount calculating part 5 is composed of frame memories 51a and 51b for storing images for each of frames, a motion amount detecting part 52, a inclined part detecting part 53 and a motion amount correcting part 54. The motion of an image is detected by the motion amount calculating part 5 and corresponding to the degree of that motion, encoding is performed. Thus, when the motion is violent, the false edge can be accurately canceled. When the motion is small with low possibility of the occurrence of the false edge, on the other hand, the number of gradations is increased, and a still picture can be expressed with the maximum number of gradations.
