PURPOSE: An opposed type reciprocating compressor is provided, in which the second piston is accommodated into the compression space of the first piston, to thereby reduce overall length and size of the compressor. CONSTITUTION: An opposed type reciprocating compressor comprises a casing where a suction pipe(SP) connected to a suction pressure area(S1) and a discharge pipe(DP) connected to a discharge pressure area(S3) are communicated; the first reciprocating motor(121) and the second reciprocating motor(122) mounted within the casing, which reciprocate in an opposite direction; a cylinder(130) interposed between the first reciprocating motor and the second reciprocating motor, which has a through hole(131); the first piston(141) coupled to a mover(121B) of the first reciprocating motor and accommodated into the through hole of the cylinder, which has a compression space(S2) and the first gas flow channel(141a) communicated to the compression space and the interior of the casing; the second piston(142) coupled to a mover(122B) of the second reciprocating motor and accommodated into the compression space of the first piston, which has the second gas flow channel(142a); the first valve assembly(150) mounted to open/shut the first gas flow channel of the first piston; and the second valve assembly(160) mounted to open/shut the second gas flow channel of the second piston.
