PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing device capable of automatically ensuring a recording area for contents without giving a user trouble if there is no free area in a recorder in recording the contents. SOLUTION: A controlling part 5 transmits a control signal to a receiving part 2 when a set time arrives to make the receiving part 2 receive a video signal 12 of a prescribed channel. The received video signal 12 is transmitted to a recording and reproducing part 3 and the controlling part 5. The recording and reproducing part 3 supplies recorded state information about free capacity of a recording medium 4 and recorded data contents to the controlling part 5, and the controlling part 5 compares data capacity for recording with the free capacity of the recording medium 4 with respect to the received video signal 12, decides recording processing and gives an instruction to the recording and reproducing part 3. The recording and reproducing part 3 records a video signal 13 on the recording medium 4 on the basis of the instruction.
