PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing system having preferable electromagnetic conversion characteristics, in particular, significantly improved S/N ratio in a high density recording region and having the combination of an inductive head and an MR head and to provide a coating type magnetic recording medium having excellent productivity and high density characteristics with low noise in the recording and reproducing system in combination with an MR head. SOLUTION: The gap length gl of the inductive head satisfies gl<=0.3μm, gl/10<=Dmax<=gl/2, gl/100<=Dmin<=gl/5 and gl/10<=t<=gl/2, wherein Dmax is the maximum particle diameter of the ferromagnetic powder, Dmin is the minimum particle diameter of the ferromagnetic powder and t is the thickness of the magnetic layer.
